The locality of Pian Melzé, an Occitan name that means Larch wood, is also known as Pian della Regina, situated in Valle Po, in the province of Cuneo. The Po Valley is carved out by the river Po before the latter enters the Padanian Plain.

The Riserva Naturale Speciale del Pian del Re (Special Natural Reserve of Pian del Re), at 2.020 m, above Crissolo. The area is also called the “sorgenti del Po” (sources of the Po), because it is considered the place of the official source of the longest river in Italy. The ecosystem of the reserve is enriched by the presence of a great variety of animal species.

The Cappella di Pian del Re was built in honour of the Madonna della Neve (Our Lady of the snow), designed by the engineer Giuseppe Gastaldi from Luserna San Giovanni. The building of the Chapel took place in 1899 and the paintings that decorate it were realized by Giuseppe Castel from Turin.
