Valle Gesso is a valley of the Maritime Alps, characterized by the wide basin of the river Gesso. The valley belongs to the territory of the Maritime Alps and is overlooked by important summits, first of all the Argentera. Valle Gesso is characterized by splendid environments with a rich flora and fauna, the presence of which was decisive for the institution of the Parco delle Alpi Marittime, a protected area of the Piedmont Region that touches the Mercantour National Park on the French territory.

In this territory is located the Rifugio Genova 2.020 m, municipality of Entracque.

Lago del Chiotas is an artificial basin, created between the seventies and early nineteen-eighties by constructing two dams called of Chiotas and of Colle Laura in the area of the old Piano del Chiotas, on the eastern side of the Argentera Range. The over 1,000 m altitude gap with the Lago della Piastra below is used to produce electric power. On the southern bank of the lake rises the new Rifugio Genova-Figari, created in replacement of the refuge with the same name that was submerged after the basin was created.
